Safe Sleep Tips for Winter Nights

Winter nights bring unique challenges for ensuring your baby sleeps safely and comfortably. Here are essential tips to keep your little one cozy and secure during the colder months.
1. Maintain the Right Room Temperature
Keep your baby's room between 68-72°F (20-22°C). A room that's too warm increases the risk of SIDS, while too cold can disrupt sleep. Use a room thermometer to monitor temperature accurately.
2. Dress Baby in Layers
Use the one-layer-more rule: dress your baby in one more layer than you're comfortable wearing. A onesie plus a sleep sack is usually perfect for winter nights.
3. Choose the Right Sleep Sack
Sleep sacks are safer than blankets and come in different TOG ratings for various temperatures. For winter, a 2.5 TOG sleep sack works well in most homes.
4. Keep the Crib Clear
Never use loose blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals in the crib, even in winter. These items increase suffocation risk and aren't necessary when baby is properly dressed.
5. Monitor Humidity Levels
Winter heating can dry out the air. Use a humidifier to maintain 30-50% humidity, which helps prevent dry skin and congestion while promoting better sleep.
6. Check for Overheating
Feel your baby's chest or back of neck to check temperature. If they feel sweaty or very warm, remove a layer. Cold hands and feet are normal and don't indicate your baby is too cold.
7. Position Baby Correctly
Always place baby on their back to sleep, on a firm mattress with a fitted sheet. This remains the safest sleep position regardless of season.
Following these winter sleep safety guidelines ensures your baby stays comfortable and secure throughout the cold months, giving everyone better rest!
